Silkworm DX
A downloadable game
A ten-minute epic about a bug trying to save its horrendous game, stretched thin and with far, far too many minigames that the boss was insistent upon.
The original Jam version (linked here) was made in approximately 33 hours of raw work for Ludum Dare 46, according to my logs. This slightly expanded version (about six hours of raw work) just patches some silly bugs, increases accessibility, and, most importantly, better conveys my original intentions with the game. OFFICIAL CHANGELOG AT THE BOTTOM.
In continuing work on Silkworm, I really wanted to keep the eccentric and decision-efficient spirit of the original entry alive, both to accomodate for my schedule (still busy during Corona-time) and to allow me to continue working with the same relative relaxation and freedom that I'd made the original with. That meant limiting the amount of time I used to make the three short music tracks I added (and using Bosca Coeil in typical Jam fashion... I'd never used it before), only adding sound effects where necessary, and only adding one mechanic - the one I didn't have the one hour of implementation time that I would have needed.
Of course, that was to help me take the normally-heavy load of assessing and reassessing the project off of my shoulders. This was just the second exercise in STILL being aware of and alright with simple improvements I could have made. Jokes could have been smoother, the story expanded to allow for the gameplay to take precedence, but that was kind of the point.
I hope you enjoy! I'm still amazed at how much I managed to do within that 72 hour period, even with work, meals to prepare, a dog to walk, and a family to be with. I can't wait for my second Jam!
PERTINENT CHANGES:
- Made controls and short-term goals harder to miss
- Small graphical adjustments for photosensitive-friendliness
- Story rework - less text overall, pruning less important text and adding/keeping important content
- Eased the game's difficulty curve and added more checkpoints in the final level
- Made certain important text unskippable, but shortened the lengths of some cutscenes when seeing them after the first time
- Reduced text-fluff overall in an effort to mitigate players skipping text
- Added three music tracks for the Glitch, FPS, and AI sections respectively
- Sonic adjustments (added character voices and interactions sounds)
- Graphical adjustments (changes to some sprites for readability and a portrait for story reasons, some background clean-up)
- Two minor mechanical changes to better suit my initial intentions (in the Breakout and AI sections, respectively)
- Minor changes across the board to reconcile silly mistakes overlooked within the last few hours of the Jam
